Not many of you might know this, but we are just about to celebrate our first birthday. And so I figured it’s probably time to share with you the story of how it all started.

How Upicnic came into being is actually an interesting tale. It begs the question: why did we decide to go down the entrepreneurial path in the most competitive city on earth?

It’s not like I woke up one morning and decided that I wanted my life to be disrupted. You see, it started with an idea. And ideas are dangerous and highly contagious creatures.

Really, I was just travelling and having a good time minding my own business. Then one day, as I was making my way through the Middle East, I happened to notice the cutest little city park in the middle of Israel. It really caught my attention because it was overcrowded by picnic blankets and baskets, to the point I thought there was some kind of very organized event going on. Cute Instagram picture moment, I thought – but just as I was about to move on, I saw people coming out from one of the neighboring buildings carrying one of those same exact picnic basket. I had to check it out.

As it turned out, all those picnics were coming out of a small shop. More like a bodega, really. And when I got in there, it all became so simple: grab a basket, fill it up, pay. Borrow a blanket if you’d like and then return it with the basket when you’re done.

Eventually, my trip and daydreaming wound up to an end. Back to my 9-to-5, I kept picturing that genius bodega and I instinctively started planning how to replicate it in New York. I couldn’t stop talking about it; I started researching demographics, competitors, Central Park - and so eventually my amazing friend Jourdan ended up buying our first web domain – I suppose as a form of encouragement mixed with the genuine intent of just shutting me up.

Everything else snowballed from then on – Marta, our food fairy, joined almost immediately, designing our amazing menu, and creating the Upicnic brand. I took care of the tech behind it all, and added the sports and games component that’s become so successful with the New York crowd. Temi swept us off our feet with her amazing entertainment skills, Gianluca kept us organized and rolling on schedule, and Ege still manages to blow our mind every day with his crazy gorilla marketing ideas.

That being said, Upicnic would not have become a reality without our amazing friends, family and interns who were not only our first adopters but also converted in an amazing referral machine and walking advertisement.

It’s amazing how much we have accomplished in the span of only 12 months: Upicnic brought smart picnicking to New York; no more dragging coolers to the park, no more schlepping around lawn games, and food, and equipment. We created something that solves a real problem for one of the arguably most demanding crowds in the country.

All of that happened in just a year. Let’s see what 2016 has in store for us.
