It’s no secret that New York City’s urban landscape has made us believe that by living in the city, we’ve signed away all opportunities of being “one with nature.” This is where we’re wrong. Although we might not have the chance to camp in the Adirondacks or hike a mountain, throughout this series we’ve unlocked locations around the concrete jungle that give us the perfect balance between nature and civilization.
This week’s spot is no different. Located right off 5th avenue, East Meadow serves as the Upper East Side’s quiet picnic haven.
Plan a picnic here if: You live a bougie lifestyle but sometimes need to take a break. An exhausting stroll along Madison and 5th avenue should always be followed by a picnic in East Meadow.
What’s nearby: Shopping, duh! East Meadow leaves you just a few steps away from Uptown’s shopping district, along with our beloved Museum Mile.
How to get there: East Meadow runs along the park’s east side, from 97th to 100th street, so your best bet transportation-wise is the 6 train to 96th Street and Lexington Avenue, and a 5-10 minute walk westward.
Closest restrooms? Because every shopper needs a bathroom break. There's a small but generally very clean facility next to the playground right off 5th ave & 98th. Or, you can walk westward to the North Meadow Recreation Center for your pampering needs.
Rules you should know about: East Meadow is open from dawn ‘til dusk every day, and is only closed during the winter season. Pets are welcome, so bring along your favorite animal companions.
But most importantly, have fun!
