Bryant Park: Events, Skating, Movies and More in the Heart of Manhattan

Bryant Park is the most densely occupied urban park in the world, and one of New York’s most visited parks - and for a good reason: if you have lived here long enough, you have probably bruised something while ice-skating here in the winter, and you have brought at least one of your crushes to their summer movie festival.

While the area where Bryant Park sits nowadays was designated public property back in 1686, it wasn’t until 1846 that construction began to create a park in the area next to what used to be the site for one of the city’s reservoirs and is now the central branch of the New York’s Public Library. The park was later renamed Bryant Park after the New York Evening Post editor and abolitionist William Cullen Bryant.

This park holds such a grip on all New Yorkers’ hearts – not only because it is a green haven of soft grass in the middle of busy midtown Manhattan; not only because our glorious public library sits at its eastern edge; but mostly because of the cool stuff you can do in Bryant Park while eating a Belgian waffle with Nutella and sipping on a Starbucks.

The park is managed by the private not-for-profit corporation Bryant Park Corporation – who has done an unbelievably fantastic job of restoring the park’s appearance, as well as launching new initiatives to attract visitors and create a more involved community around the park.

While many of you are already familiar with the HBO summer film festival and the cool movies they play under the stars every Monday night for the entire summer, maybe not all of you know that Bryant Park also hosts mass yoga classes, Thai Chi classes, a-listers Broadway musicals recitals, ping pong tournaments, and even business writing lessons at the Reading Room

Plan a picnic here if: you are looking to be surrounded by Gotham’s hustle and bustle, admire the skyscrapers towering over the park, and want to eat yummy food and relax on comfy grass – or if you simply happen to want to have a picnic in midtown.

What’s nearby: well… it’s midtown Manhattan, so how about “everything” is nearby? Times Square, Grand Central, Herald Square, the Empire State Building, all the shops on 5th ave, Rockfeller Center and Saint Patrick… you get the idea. Obviously, the Public Library east of Bryant Park is worth an entire day of exploring, so suit yourself, the options around this park are endless.

How to get there: again, not to be obvious, but it’s midtown Manhattan – so jump on any train and exit at 42nd street. Both Times Square and Grand Central are a couple of blocks away, so it’s a win-win. Do not ever for any reason try to take a cab or Uber your way to Bryant Park unless you want to part ways with half of your salary – and the better part of your day.

Closest restrooms? Bryant Park maintains some of the cleanest public restrooms in the universe. They are located at the northern entrance of the park, close to the entrance to the subway.

Rules you should know about: standard rules of conduct apply – so be a nice human being, clean the mess you make (if any) and don’t be too loud, but you can otherwise lounge with music or play unorganized sports and things like that.

And as always, happy picnicking!
