Brooklyn Bridge Park Gets a New Upgrade With Completion of Pier 5

The newest addition to this re-developed port neighborhood might just be our new favorite picnic destination.

From Port to Park

Over the past several years, the Brooklyn Heights shoreline has grown to become one of the finest green areas in New York City. However, it hasn't always been this way. Once a hub for cargo and steamboats, the neighborhood was bustling in an entirely different way.

Rachel Wilson, a born and raised Brooklyn baby, recalls fondly the days before this stretch of grass was installed. "When I was growing up the docks were active with big cargo ships coming in and out on a daily basis. I used to love to watch the ferries steering them in and out of the harbor."

When the ports became inactive, the neighborhood took a turn for the worse. Eventually, construction began to turn this former port into the perfect park.

Attractions Galore

The park boasts more than 10 main areas, all with a variety of attractions and events for everyone to enjoy. Head to Ferry Landing to eat lobster rolls and ice cream while you hide below the famous double arches of the Brooklyn bridge or bike along the stretch of the 26-mile Brooklyn Greenway that runs straight through the park.

Pier 5

The newest addition to this waterfront park is Pier 5, where fun and games meet relaxation. With three full soccer fields, an expansive picnic area, and Ample Hills Creamery's famous ice cream, Pier 5 is the perfect spot to spend a summer afternoon.

While the Picnic Peninsula offers barbecue pits and covered tables, there's also plenty of room for one of our pre-packed spreads. Order a basket from us at www.Upicnic.com, and we'll meet you Brooklyn!
