An open letter from a New York Mom on Mother's Day

Dear child,

I am very much looking forward to seeing what you have planned for me for Mother's day 2016 (insert sarcastic smirk). I have loved you unconditionally, I have protected and nurtured you, I have guided you and given you counsel when you needed it - but I've also let you make your own mistakes. Sure, that whole "puberty" business didn't go as smoothly as planned, but seeing as you made it through without any major emotional scars, I'd say we did ok.

You have grown into a beautiful, mostly independent, and reasonably functioning adult. I don't see you as much as I used to, but you are very clever making up for it with a plethora of messaging devices. I still don't know how to freaking answer a Skype call, but I am grateful you introduced me to technology, I really enjoy it - especially now that I have learned how to use "the Google".

After so many years of fancy soaps, spa gift cards, scented candles and pashminas, I think it's time you step up your game. Call your father, gather your siblings, and give me a proper family reunion in New York City. Something I don’t have to cook for, nor clean for . And none of that restaurant nonsense - I get one day out of the whole entire year, and I refuse to have it diluted down to a one-hour meal.

No. This year, I want to have a family picnic. A whole entire day of family-time. And yes, I will expect you to bring proper picnic gear: blankets, baskets, drinks and snacks. Maybe a stack of cards. Certainly lemonade and cake. Beautiful flowers. I wouldn't say no to balloons either.

Don't spend a lot of money, but make it great. I am warning you - screw this up and you'll think the time I found you smoking pot in Central Park was freaking candyland.

xoxo

Love,

Mom
