Many will tell you that real New Yorkers do everything in their power to get out of the city for the Fourth of July, but our numbers beg to differ: so many people in New York City celebrate the 4th of July with a picnic!

And why wouldn’t they? Traffic and airfare will get you right out of any celebration mood for the long weekend, every camp ground, lodge, lake house and B&B in a 4h driving radius was booked months ago. No my friends, staycation is the new sexy – and honestly, if you were gonna pick a spot for staycationing, NYC is really the best place to do that.

Yes because picnics – but also because of all the amazing things you can do to enjoy the city over the long holiday weekend.

Here are the best ways to enjoy this year’s 4th of July in New York:

NYC Fireworks: they will be over the East River again this year, starting at around 9.20pm – you know the deal. Brooklyn Bridge Park will be the absolute best spot for you to chill all day with a picnic and then watch the spectacular pyrotechnic show from the front row. I cannot stress enough how early you will need to arrive. Do not dream of taking an Uber or getting around by any means other than subway - many streets and even big chunks of the FDR drive will start closing at 6pm, you can check out full list here.

HBO Film Festival in Bryant Park: this year we totally lucked out, for one thing because, well, the 4th of July is a Monday, and everybody in New York knows that summer Monday nights are to be spent watching awesome movies under the stars in Bryant Park. For another thing, because they will be streaming Top Gun – on Independence Day… in New York City… I mean, really, life does not get any better than that. Oh wait, it totally does! Because now you can have Upicnic go to Bryant Park early and save you prime spots to watch Top Gun in the heart of the Big Apple.

Head to the beach: Coney Island has its own 4th of July Fireworks show, which you can admire after spending the day tanning and enjoying the waves at the beach, or having fun at the many island’s attractions. That being said, Long Beach, Jones Beach, Rockaway Beach, and Orchard Beach are all amazing close-by destinations worthy of a 4th of July day-trip around NYC.

Obviously there are also all kinds of rooftops, pool parties and a million other things to do in NYC for the holiday weekend. If you ask us, we’ll be picking a not-so-popular picnicking spot and set up camp the entire day. And we suggest you do the same, because you might have been to Sheep Meadow a million times, but have you ever experienced the awesomeness that is The Great Hill or Cedar Hill or North Meadow? Get out and explore! And, obviously, Happy Independence Day America!
