May is National Bike Month and we couldn't be happier. New York City is such a wonderful city to bike through and around, and you gotta give it to our urban planners - there are bike lanes everywhere.

You could argue that bikes can be expensive, and storing them in your tiny apartment can certainly be an issue, but then again, isn't that why CityBike was invented? Sounds like you've officially run out of excuses to not bike. Cue helmet. Cue sunburn.

The real question is: how will you be celebrating National Bike Month? The question is specially important because on top of May being national Bike Month, the week of May 16th-20th Is Bike to Work Week, and May 20th will be Bike to Work Day. Yeah, that's a whole lot of biking and celebrating!

Well, if you haven't given it much thought here are the top 5 biking events in NYC to celebrate bike month:

1. Brooklyn Bike Rave - on May 14th at 7pm you can join a family-friendly biking event that will take participants on a 7.5 mile ride from Greenpoint, along the Brooklyn Waterfront through the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Brooklyn Bridge Park, ending with a party at the archway under the Manhattan Bridge.

2. We Rumble to Jumble - on May 14 The New York Bycycle club is organizing a 16 mile bike itinerary that will take participants from Chelsea through lower manhattan and into Brooklyn via the Ikea ferry and back to Manhattan. The itinerary also includes stops at Strong Rope Brewery, Vinnie's of Carroll Gardens or Frankie's Spuntino for lunch and the Bike Jumble for some light shopping.

3. National Bike to Work Day Commuter Outreach - ok so this is not technically an event, but it's still super cool. On May 20th, TransAlt will be stationed at 7 locations around NYC giving out free coffee and KIND bars.

4. Bike Central Park and end with a picnic - seems pretty self-explanatory, but let me expand a bit. On June 12th, Bike NYC is organizing a group ride from Central park, through the 79th street Greenmarket, all the way up to the Little Red Lighthouse. The idea is you can pick up picnic snacks at the Greenmarket...then again, if you are a Upicnic member you know you can simply get your basket delivered straight at the lighthouse so you don't have to ride your bike with shopping bags hanging to the side. But that's just us.
