Is there really a more fitting day than Earth Day to have a glorious picnic? And, yeah – Arbor Day is a close second. Sure, April weather has been fickle, but we are here to hope that all the kickass initiatives revolving around these glorious days will be kissed by sunshine!

Being kind to Mother Earth is an everyday job, and at Upicnic we take sustainability very seriously. That’s why all our packaging and cutlery is recyclable, sustainable and BPA-free, and that’s why our food is organic and as locally sourced as possible.

There are plenty of opportunities for all of us to give back to Mother Earth by helping out the Department of Parks with a few things, plus there are a lot of celebrations going on everywhere in New York, and even an expo.

We picked the best for you! Here are the top 6 places to be for Earth Day and Arbor Day 2016:

Fort Tryon Park at Margaret Corbin Circle: on April 17th, you can volunteer and help the department of parks  installing new plants  on the Fort Washington Terrace Slope from 10am to 2pm. Then, reward yourself with picnic right in Fort Tryon Park, one of Manhattan’s most majestic and scenic open spaces.

Union Square’s North Plaza - E. 17th St. and Park Ave: on April 17th, from 12pm to 7pm, head down to Union Square for the annual Earth Day New York events, which will include kids’ activities, as well as a number of exhibitors, displays and performers. It’s a great way to learn more about New York’s green initiatives and keep up with environmental campaigns.

Prospect Park, Brooklyn, at Audubon Center at the Boathouse: on April 17th, you can join the Prospect Park Alliance for their annual Earth Day celebration from 1pm to 4pm. It’s one giant party that includes fishing lessons and a parade, so make sure to bring a spread and make new friends!

Earth Day 5K Green Tour (location not yet disclosed): on April 22nd, you can take part in a 2.5H walking tour of a few great landmarks of green New York: the Lowline (the world's first underground park), the eco-friendly 1 Hotel Central Park, and a natural food cooking school. It’s fundraising initiative, so you can register and donate here.

Queens Botanical Gardens, Queens: on April 24th, from 11am to 6pm, go celebrate Arbor Fest at Queens Botanical Gardens by enjoying a number of activities: a petting zoo, arts and crafts, live music, face-painting, tours, and even a beer tent! You’ll definitely need a picnic after that, trust us.

Javits Center: from April 15th to the 17th, the Javits Center will be hosting New York’s annual Green Festival Expo, and these guys will be celebrating Earth Day the whole entire time! For instance, did you know the Javits center has the 2nd largest green roof on a single, free-standing building in the U.S.? Color me impressed.

If you are looking for a simpler way to celebrate Earth Day involving much fewer people, here’s our best advice:

     -   Go to ANY park

     -   Spread a blanket

     -   Bring food and eat that food with the people you love

     -   Bring games and play those games on pillowy grass

     -   Laugh, relax, eat, repeat

You can also order your Earth Day picnic with Upicnic and enjoy NYC parks hassle-free and get everything you need for your picnic delivered directly to you. It’s good to have choices!
