10 Reasons Why Picnics Are the Best First Date Idea in New York

We’ve all been on our fair share of bad NYC dates – you know, the ones where your date stares at the menu for half hour, scrolls through Instagram, or plainly shows up wasted/high/having just watched the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Cue relationship problems, cue emotional scars.

Online dating and the era of Tinder, Grindr, Happn, and Bumble did not make things any easier. I mean, dating apps and dating sites made it easier to approach people, but the chances of finding a sane person in New York City on any given day or night are still, well… pretty slim.

The best part is that every dating website out there tries to constantly overload you with tips and tricks on how to date. Because, yeah, I am totally gonna take Match.com advice - signing up for years of dating service sounds brilliant.

Say that you have beaten the odds, that you have found one of those sweet, rare unicorns to fall in love with – what do you do? Well, up until now, your nights' choices ranged from bars, to restaurants, and movies, while day-time dates were cheesy early-relationship activities like ice skating or mug painting. I agree, you would think that the modern landscape of NYC date options would be so much more interesting than that - well, sadly, it's not.

The good news is that Upicnic can now provide you with the most adorable, casual and fun date idea out there: picnic dates! I know, best NYC date ever, right?

Here are 10 reasons why picnics are the best date ideas in New York City:

#1 Original date idea: having arranged for a date in the park immediately and automatically sets you apart from the crowd and scores you at least a thousand cool points.

#2 Convenient date location: I dare you to find a neighborhood that isn't close to at least one New York City park. No way your date will be inconvenienced by the trip and cancel last minute.

#3 More casual than dinner dates: delicious food is involved in the deal either way, but on a picnic date you won’t have to try and impress anybody with your wine selection and ordering skills. You can schedule your NYC date for any time during the day or night, which gives you the option of going extra-romantic and meeting during sunset hours, or keeping it easy breezy during the day. Plus, no chances of getting a rude waiter!

#4 You can bring your dog on the date: why is this important? Because if your dog doesn’t like them, there really is no point in dating them, ever. And let's face it, having your best buddy there will ensure it is a good date regardless of the human component.

#5 Play games together on your date: outside of the bedroom, that is. I don’t need you to be a jock, but if you can’t handle being beaten at Uno, our relationship is evidently not going to work.

#6 Quiet date setting for 1-to-1 convo: if your entire dating game rests on the ability to get your date good & drunk, well, I weep for humanity. Picnic dates give you the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company in a quiet, relaxing setting, and really getting to know each other without loud speakers screaming in your ears.

#7 Surprise factor: because how adorable would it be for you and your date to simply be walking in the park and all of a sudden come upon a clearing in the forest and find that you arranged for a romantic picnic AND a string quartet??? You’re welcome.

#8 Finger food is sensual: no table standing between you, you take a bite of their sandwich, they take a sip of your drink, you casually lick your fingers, and BAM! Love is in the air. This stuff should be taught in the Good Date 101 class.

#9 Minimal effort, mad results: really, all you did was order a romantic picnic package from Upicnic, but what your date will see is a thoughtful, original, adorable, romantic, relationship-material companion.

#10 Hold hands while walking: together, into the sunset, with the Manhattan skyline around you. Whatever, I might be a hopeless romantic, but I still think holding hands while walking together is a tender, amorous habit that should be encouraged.

Bonus reason #11: picnic dates are a cheaper and much more exciting alternative to bars, movies and restaurants. They are really the only sensible investment to make for your romantic dating life in New York City.

There you have it: the Upicnic recipe for how to be romantic. No tips, no tricks, just pure unadulterated awesomeness.

It’s spring time after all – go out and fall in love on a perfect NYC date!
