Dedicated to: the environmentally-friendly folk who are all sorts of positive shenanigans about disposing garbage properly, educating others on preserving trees because heck - we need all the oxygen we can get, and making everyone else realize how important it is to take care of our fragile home (Mother Nature). In light of your persevering and impactful work, I hope you like the idea of a sustainable picnic :)

So what makes a picnic *utterly* environmentally-aware, and earthy, and just phenomenal?

1. Invest in a picnic basket. Doing this will keep you happy and stress-free in the long run. (Your future self told me to save you from extra stress, so.) Picnic baskets might be a little bulky but nothing that we can’t handle! Now when someone asks if you lift, you can proudly say yes! Plus, they’re aesthetically pleasing and simply cute. The basket doesn’t have to be an artifact from the dinosaur age - modern ones are super accessible these days. But seriously, invest in a cool basket. Do it for the Earth - and for the Insta, if you will. Picnic baskets are no game compared to flimsy brown paper bags or anything teenage hipsters might coin, “basic.”

2. You CAN sit with us (if you don’t know this reference, I apologize) if you use reusable utensils or cutlery! You can replace tissues or napkins with cloth napkins, plastic water bottles with thermoses, paper plates or plastic knives with silverware or durable tupperware, etc. Think again if you think plastics are completely lethal (ok sometimes they are), but luckily, Upicnic is cool enough to provide plastic containers that are 100% eco-friendly. Did I mention that our cutlery is also organic and vegan as well (forreal)? Reusable stuff is cool, but biodegradable/compostable products are even cooler. There are just so many options - lucky you! Reusable cutlery is not only yours to keep, but it’s also more sanitary… in moderation to your cleaning habits and tidiness, of course. Now you can use your utensils without bringing out the inner germaphobe in you and bring along your child’s favorite Harry Potter bowl so they will actually eat their lunch (10 points for Gryffindor). Or the alternative -- the dirty products that you’re done using will compost into the Earth and become an awesome plant and soil fertilizer. You’re a star.

3. When filling up your picnic basket, buy LOCAL. This is so important, simply because you are not only benefiting yourself but also farmers around the area - woohoo! Local, organic farms do not use harmful pesticides and/or fertilizers, which ensures that the food you consume is very, very healthy. In addition to health benefits for you, you are also contributing to the improvement of the environment’s health. Preventing the use of detrimental chemicals and other unconventional methods of growing food will make your picnic experience much more sustainable (every environmentalist’s dream). In addition, purchasing organic produce from local farmers help them keep their jobs and make their work more valuable, so just keep in mind that you’re doing an Angel’s work. Aren’t win-win situations so great? Inside scoop: Upicnic food is not 100% certified organic - wait for it - because while we always use organic veggies, we also choose to support the local community while sourcing our desserts and snacks, and getting the organic certification is not always easy and affordable for many artisans.

Now that I’ve shared with you several ways to make a picnic more eco-friendly, I hope you’ll implement these simple tips the next time you decide to have a picnic. And don’t forget to share your sustainable picnic experience with us!
