OVERVIEW

Sheep Meadow is Central Park’s largest lawn and “the” place to be to mingle and show off while chilling your way through the summer.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Sheep Meadow is a designated quiet zone, which means:

Dogs are not allowed, except service dogs

You can’t ride your bike around (also, don’t try to roller blade on the grass… that’s not a rule, though maybe it should be)

Don’t set up actual organized sport competitions

Try and keep the music to yourself

 

CLOSEST BATHROOM

You have two options:

To the west side, next to Tavern on The Green – bran new facility, very clean, and not everybody knows about it quite yet

To the north side, next to Le Pain Quotidien – you might find longer lines here… also, it’s an older structure

North Meadow

OVERVIEW

Most easily accessed from 5th avenue, North Meadow offers plenty of picnic spots as well as sport fields - canine companions are welcome and the whole area is very family-friendly.

Great Hill

OVERVIEW

Most easily accessed from Central Park West Ave, Great Hill is a picnicker’s paradise, with plenty of smaller, secluded areas far away from tourists and crowds. Ideal for families, couples, and semi-private birthdays.

Around Great Hill you have two options, depending on time of year:

On the North side of the oval on top of the hill - but it's not open year-round.

To the East, Lasker Rink – but make sure to know your way around the area before you venture there, it's not a starightforward path.

East Meadow

OVERVIEW

Right off of 5th Avenue, East Meadow is a lovely haven for families, couples and groups of sporty friends alike. The area is definitely transited, but not overcrowded.

CLOSEST BATHROOM

To the West, at the North Meadow Recreation Center. To get there you have to go up some stairs, cross the East Drive and keep through for a couple of minutes.

 

LOCATION

East side from 97th to 100th street.

If you enter the park at 96th you won’t find it, you have to get in on 97th.

Great Lawn

OVERVIEW

Nestled right in the middle of Central Park, the Great Lawn is home to many a softball field and offers amazing views of the Manhattan skyline as well as the Belvedere Castle. Not too quiet, not too noisy – though you might want to keep an eye on those itinerant foul balls.

OVERVIEW

The Peter Jay Sharp Children's Glade is a lovely area designed for children to explore nature, arts and culture - tall trees all around and rustic stone & tree trunk benches allow little New Yorkers to immerse themselves in the environment all around.

Strawberry Fields

 

OVERVIEW

Best known for its world-famous John Lennon memorial, Strawberry Fields is a designated quiet zone - although you will find at least one guitarist harmonizing Beatles songs in the vicinity. Shaded through and through by majestic American Helms, Strawberry Fields can be a wonderful picnic spot if you know how to find your way around and avoid the mobs of tourists that generally flod the area.

Arthur Ross Pinetum

OVERVIEW

Located between Central Park West Ave and the Great Lawn, the Artur Ross Pinetum features two designated picnic areas, plus basketball courts and volleyball nets. The sweet, pungent smell of the pines will transport to a whole other dimension.
